NPL WA newbies Western Knights have continued their excellent start to life post-promotion, while Stirling Macedonia completed a rapid-fire turnaround on the weekend.

The Knights overcame Inglewood United 1-0 to ensure they are the only team to have won both their opening games, thanks to Kristian Santich’s second-half winner.

After winning the Division One title last season, the Knights continued their winning run in the NPL at the expense of Inglewood, who sit last after back-to-back 1-0 defeats.

Both teams had chances throughout the game, but it was settled by Santich just after the hour mark when he stabbed home a loose ball in the box.

The Knights game was the only match of the round to not involve multiple goals, with three games producing at least five goals.

Ciaran Byrne was the hero for Stirling Macedonia as he scored a 10-minute hat-trick to help his side recover from a two-goal deficit to beat Perth 3-2.

Perth had taken the lead through David Ninkovich’s penalty, before a Gordon Perkins header doubled the hosts’ lead.

Both sides were reduced to 10 men prior to half-time as Federico Achilli and Dejan Spaseski were given their marching orders.

But Bryne swung the game in the 59th minute with a well-taken left-footed finish, before his superb header four minutes later equalised and shortly afterwards, clipped home Calvin Whitney’s cut-back to seal three points.

Olympic Kingsway were given a reality check after their big win over Stirling last week, as they were thumped 5-1 by Bayswater City.

Remarkably, it took until 55 minutes for the deadlock to be broken when Liam Boland headed home to give Kingsway the lead, but Gordon Smith scored two goals in less than 60 seconds to swing the game in Bayswater’s favour.

Chris Jackson made it 3-1 10 minutes later, and then Smith completed his hat-trick from his own saved penalty before Jackson added his second of the afternoon.

Another newly-promoted team - Fremantle City - got their first win of the season by beating Armadale 4-1, sparked by two goals either side of the break by Alex McClean.

Alex Silla headed home for Fremantle to put them in the clear and although Ryley Wishart-Stephen pulled a goal back from the spot, Dylan White put the result beyond doubt late.

Perth RedStar needed to come from behind to beat Balcatta Etna, who led through Ben Hinshelwood’s penalty, only to come unstuck after late goals to Theo Leeming and Matty George sealed a 2-1 win.

Floreat Athena continued their unbeaten start to the season, but were forced to share the points with Perth Glory in a 1-1 draw.

Nick Ambrogio opened the scoring for Athena, but Jaylen Pearman rescued a point for the Glory after the break with a header past Jason Saldaris.
