WAFL off-season central: Signings, player movement, retirements and more for every club ahead of 2022 season

The WAFL’s new season is nearly upon us. Check out how your club is faring with all the ins and outs. Several de-listed AFL players have returned to the WAFL including former West Coast speedster Brayden Ainsworth, who signed a three-year deal with Perth rather than joining his original club Subiaco. Fellow ex-Eagle Ben Johnson has gone back to his old WAFL club West Perth, while premiership tagger Mark Hutchings has also re-joined the Falcons. SCROLL DOWN FOR THE INS AND OUTS OF EVERY CLUB Luke Meadows, back from a stint in the VFL, is another big in for West Perth as they start life under returning coach Darren Harris who replaces great mate and Peel Thunder-bound Geoff Valentine. Jarrod Cameron is another big name returning to the WAFL, with the former West Coast goalsneak back at Swan Districts. Fremantle running machine Stefan Giro has chosen reigning premiers Subiaco over a host of other WAFL clubs who were chasing his signature. After two years at Adelaide, Claremont colts premiership skipper Ronin O’Connor is back at Tigerland. Most clubs have been affected by retirements with former Claremont captain and Port Adelaide-listed midfielder Kane Mitchell hanging up the boots alongside ex-Saint Tom Ledger. Peel skipper and ex-Essendon midfielder Ben Howlett and West Coast premiership defender Will Schofield, who also lined up for the Thunder in 2021, have also called time on their decorated career. Swan Districts have lost stalwarts Matt Riggio and Alex Howard to retirement, likewise with Nick Kommer at East Fremantle, Brant Colledge, Christian Eyres, Chris Masten and Matthew Rogers at Perth and Steve Potente and Kris Shannon at West Perth. Julian Ameduri, Nathan Blee, Rohan Kerr and Shaq McKenzie have hung up the boots at East Perth, who have picked up returning ex-Hawthorn defender Damon Greaves and did a trade with Perth for former Sydney Swan Elijah Taylor with outgoing ruck Ajang Ajang. East Fremantle were hit hard by West Coast’s injury crisis with the AFL club snatching recruit Tom Joyce and talls Luke Strnadica and Hugh Dixon ahead of last month’s SSP deadline. The Sharks picked up former Claremont ruckman Jeremy Goddard as cover.
