West Coast have made a bold play for Geelong premiership forward Gryan Miers as they look to find some much-needed ground-level presence in attack.

AFL.com.au is reporting that the Eagles have shown interest in the star Cat, who still has two years left on his contract at the Victorian powerhouse.

It comes as West Coast look to add small-forward depth, having lost premiership stars Liam Ryan (St Kilda) and Jamie Cripps (retirement) in the past 12 months.

Miers is likely to stay at the Cats though, despite the impending arrival of Greater Western Sydney captain Toby Greene via free agency.

The 27-year-old battled a partially torn ACL this season, which restricted him to only six goals in 17 games after he chose to avoid surgery as Geelong were in the premiership hunt.

Cats list boss Andrew Mackie all but shut down any chance of Miers moving when it was raised on Thursday morning.

“I’ve heard some speculation on him … clubs over the last couple of years have raised his (name) amongst other names,” Mackie told Trade Radio.

“Other players have been raised this year. I think it’s clear the Saints were asking about Lawson Humphries.

“But no, from our end, it’s been pretty quiet from that point of view.”

West Coast are continuing to rebuild their list under coach Andrew McQualter, who is out of contract at the end of next season.

A dynamic small forward is widely viewed as one of their biggest targets over the trade period and draft to complement leading spearhead Jake Waterman and young gun Jobe Shanahan.

Pre-season signing Milan Murdock was their most prolific ground-level forward this season with 19 goals, with premiership backman Tom Cole (nine goals) and next-generation academy product Malakai Champion (four) among those trialled in the role.

Stalwart Elliot Yeo (13 goals) also played more in attack this season as he transitions towards the end of his career. At the same time, Harley Reid (15) and No.1 draftee Willem Duursma (14) also hit the scoreboard regularly.

West Coast are set to be active in the trade period once again, with the club doing their due diligence on former Melbourne captain Jack Viney after he was told by the Demons they could not guarantee him midfield minutes next season.

Viney still has two years left on his contract and has interest from Essendon as well, with the 32-year-old set to make a decision on his future early next week.

Fellow Melbourne premiership star Trent Rivers is also weighing up a return to Western Australia after 140 games in seven seasons at the Demons.

Rivers is contracted until the end of next season, when he will be a free agent and won’t cost the Eagles at the trade table.

Hawthorn forward Sam Butler has also been linked to the Eagles again, having signed a two-year contract last August but struggling to break into Sam Mitchell’s best 23.
