Harley Reid copped what appeared to be a painful injury blow - while on the bench - in the early stages of West Coast’s clash against Brisbane.

It came as Jack Hutchinson was ruled out for the game in the opening moments amid a frenetic opening to the Optus Stadium clash.

Reid went to the bench shortly after being felled in a bump by Noah Answerth that landed then Lions defender on report. He landed awkwardly after the contact and went to the bench soon after.

After inspecting his left ankle, Reid appeared to be fine as he stood up on the bench area. But he immediately went down, looking in pain, and it was unclear whether he was feeling the impact of the previous knock or whether he had taken an errant step in the area between the dugout and the turf.

Reid then looked in discomfort as he got up and tried to run off the injury, before returning to his seat on the pine.

He failed to feature for the remainder of the first term before heading to the rooms for quarter-time and not reappearing until the opening minutes of the second quarter.

Reid returned to the action after eight minutes of the second term - immediately seeking out Answerth to remonstrate - but appeared largely unbothered by the injury.

Eagles coach Andrew McQualter at half time described the setback as a “tweak of the ankle”.

It came as Hutchinson was earlier ruled out with a right hamstring injury the concern.

Hutchinson was proppy after being nudged by Brisbane’s Noah Answerth while marking on the lead in the forward pocket. While he took his shot at goal, he ran immediately to the bench and was quickly down to the rooms before being ruled out for the night.

The blow left the Eagles one short for effectively the entire match, and now brings into question Hutchinson’s status for the rest of the season. West Coast have just five matches left after this weekend.

After 16 appearances last season, Hutchinson was playing just his sixth game of the year.
