West Coast defender Reuben Ginbey has sent a scare through the Eagles after landing heavily on his back after a marking contest.

Ginbey has been a shining light in a dismal one-win campaign to date for West Coast, but looks to have done damage after a high-flying spoil against Swans ruckman Brodie Grundy.

The defender attacked a pack at speed, leaping from three deep to interrupt Grundy’s mark attempt and get the ball to ground.

However, the landing didn’t stick for the young Eagle as Ginbey came down heavily on his back after flipping in mid-air.

The 20-year-old rolled on the turf in considerable discomfort before being escorted straight to the rooms.

In positive signs, he was under his own steam as he made his way to the bench and received a pat on the shoulder from coach Andrew McQualter.

After a brief assessment Ginbey returned to the ground but remained proppy as he slotted straight back into defence.

He was taken back out of the action after less than five minutes, Tyrell Dewar activated off the sub bench.

Rhett Bazzo was also in the wars early, his nose taped up after a heavy blow to the face during the first term while ruckman Matt Flynn ended the first half with a head bandage.

West Coast were given cause to celebrate as mid-season draftee Jacob Newton dobbed his maiden AFL goal to give the home side a slender lead at the main break.
