The real places of Outlander 8
The eighth and final season of the epic series Outlander is set to premiere on streaming services on March 6, 2026.
And Scotland is in the spotlight again.
A spokesperson for Visit Britain reveals that Eglinton Country Park in Ayrshire, with its woodland paths and the ruins of Eglinton Castle is centre stage.
So too are the towering 14th-century stone walls of Doune Castle in Perthshire. It is used as the setting for the series’ Castle Leoch.
The real Midhope Castle in West Lothian is the fictional Lallybroch, Jamie Fraser’s family home.
Falkland, below the Lomond Hills in Fife, is used as 1940s Inverness. And it plays it well, with its cobbled lanes, and restored renaissance Falkland Palace, where Stuart kings and queens once held court.
The fishing village of Culross, about 50 minutes’ drive from Falkland, has winding streets which stood in for fictional Cranesmuir. Culross Palace, with ochre-painted walls and orchard garden that appear in several scenes, can be visited. So too can the 13th century Culross Abbey.

Glenfinnan Monument This monument marks the spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard, starting the 1745 Jacobite Rising.
Culloden Battlefield It is here that Claire and Jamie say their tearful goodbyes. Visit this site where many clans, including the Frasers and MacKenzies, fought in the 1745 Jacobite Rising alongside Bonnie Prince Charlie.
Edinburgh’s Royal Mile & the Old Town Scotland’s capital is the setting for a number of scenes in the books. Wander the atmospheric cobbled streets and narrow wynds of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh’s Old Town. This is where Claire and Jamie reunite after 20 years.
Palace of Holyroodhouse No Outlander experience would be complete without a visit to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official residence of HM The King in Scotland, and where Claire and Jamie beseech the Prince to abandon his cause. Situated at the end of the Royal Mile, the palace is closely associated with Scotland’s turbulent past, including Bonnie Prince Charlie.
