Albany was one of six locations in regional WA which hosted a walk to raise awareness around greyhound adoption, and to celebrate the breed.
Many greyhounds are looking for their forever homes, often following careers as racing dogs.
The Great Global Greyhound Walk attracted 89 greyhounds across the strolls in Albany, Denmark, Manjimup, Bunbury, Geraldton and Kalgoorlie.
The walk in Albany on Sunday included 19 dogs and their owners.
Dr Caroline McMullen, Racing WA’s head of animal welfare said greyhounds make wonderful pets.
“The Great Global Greyhound Walk is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate greyhounds and showcase what so many owners already know — they’re amazing pets,” she said.
“Events like these help learn more about the rewarding experience of adopting a retired racing greyhound.
“Through our Greyhounds as Pets WA program, Racing WA works hard to ensure retired greyhounds find their forever homes.
“Greyhound ownership and adoption continue to grow across WA, and events such as the Great Global Greyhound Walk play an important role in raising awareness of the breed and encouraging more people to consider adoption.”
The walk also hopes to bring sighthounds to the fore — a type of dog which spots its prey rather than hunting by smell — like lurchers.
Walk organisers said there were 748 walks in 48 countries across the world, including in Seattle and Washington in the US, Shanghai, China and Bucharest, Romania.
Almost 17,000 sighthounds “walked together” according to the Great Global Greyhound Walk website.
