GSSA 2025: Last-gasp twist puts Caledonian top of the ladder as Everett and Grant break gallant Polonia hearts

Albany Caledonian cemented their place at the top of the Great Southern Soccer Association senior men’s ladder with a last-gasp victory over Polonia on Saturday night.

Only two goals in the final minute got them home after Polonia had taken a surprise lead through Escher Nash in the 21st minute.

Jeremy Everett scored the equaliser in the 90th minute and seconds later Fraser Grant bagged the winner to break Polonia hearts.

Caledonians now have maximum points after three games, leaving them two points clear of Phoenix and with a game in hand.

Phoenix walloped six past Bayswater without reply, the goals coming at regular intervals.

Corey Plug opened and finished the scoring while Malcolm van Burgel also scored twice.

Callum Postmus and Jason Bosch were the other marksmen.

In the women’s senior league on May 21, Caledonians put eight past Sharks while Denmark and Rovers dramatically drew 1-1.

Keen to share the spoils, there were two goals apiece for Caledonians’ Libby Morris, Holly Froehnelt, Jessica Baines and Ellie Puls.

Skye Parker had put Denmark ahead but a red card to Kyah-Renee Turner in the 89th minute opened the door for Rovers and Georgia Whitelaw converted the subsequent penalty.

In Friday’s games, Denmark thrashed Sharks 11-0 and Rovers beat Phoenix 4-0 thanks to a hat-trick from Stella Cuthbert.

Caledonians lead the table with maximum points after four games, five clear of Denmark.

Phoenix crushed Bayswater 11-0 in a one-sided men’s reserves contest while Polonia downed Caledonian 3-2 on Saturday.

Reagan Korthuis bagged a hat-trick in the rout while Caelen Lambe, Dylan Burrow and Cameron Spence fired home for Polonia.

Caledonians’ scorers were Robson Nielsen and Tyler Buchanan.

In the women’s reserves competition Denmark Rezzies beat Albany Caledonian 3-2, coming home after being 2-1 down on Friday night.

Lumeah Masih scored twice to turn the tables in Denmark’s favour late on.

Phoenix beat Rovers 6-0 in the other game.

Mt Barker and Polonia enjoyed wins in the women’s development competition while Albany Caledonian Thistle, Polonia and Griffins were celebrating in the socials on Friday.

On May 21 and 22 there were wins in the men’s social competition for Denmark Blue Wrens, Crosskeys, Rovers and Phoenix while Old Boys and Rovers Vets drew 0-0.
