A 20-year-old lioness has died at Perth Zoo.

The zoo posted on its Facebook page today, saying its elderly lioness Shinyanga had succumbed to an age-related illness and her quality of life was ‘compromised’.

They said they hoped she was ‘enjoying a bounty of chicken beyond the rainbow bridge.’

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our golden queen, elderly African Lioness, Shinyanga,” it said.

“Known as “Shiny” by her keepers, Shinyanga was a much-loved big cat at Perth Zoo and a regal ambassador for her species.

“She was born at Mogo Zoo in NSW and despite being hand-reared as a cub; her first keeper described her as an independent cat from the start.

“In 2012, Shinyanga padded into Perth Zoo, making an instant impact and bonding with male lions Mandela and Nelson.

“In her twilight years, she confidently adjusted to solitary life.

“Shinyanga was born into a litter of three and the last of them to leave this planet.

“She was a remarkable lion and will be sadly missed by the Perth Zoo family and all who knew her.”
