The Broome Squash Club has made history as the first team from the town to win a grand final in its respective division at the annual country week championships from September 26-28.

Competing in D division, the Broome Squash Club team defeated the Narrogin side to come away from the competition with the grand final victory.

Club representative Glenn Bridgeman said the Broome team had made local history.

“The team was ecstatic with the win, not just for the sake of winning but also going into the record books as the first Broome team ever to win,” he said.

“We took out D-grade, and given the very high standard, was a special win. This is the first time a Broome team has won a title, having made a final once before.”

Broome also fielded a H-grade team but just missed out on the grand final win, coming second to Narrogin.

The club also attended the FeNaClNG Squash Tournament in Dampier in August, winning the B-grade trophy.

It will also compete in the Busselton Invitational later this month.

Mr Bridgeman said it was the first time the club had won a title since first sending a team to the championships in 2017.

“We have already begun talks to go back and defend next year with a much larger squad,” he said.

He urged newcomers to come down to the squash club and get involved.

“Anyone interested should come down to the BRAC either Tuesday or Wednesday to have a look,” Mr Bridgeman said.

“Broome Squash Club has an incredible culture and our slogan is ‘sportsmanship is everything’, and because of that everyone feels welcomed and included.”
