The Kimberley Colts went undefeated through day one of the WA Country Football Colts Championships but fell short in the division two grand final, going down to Regional Districts by 46 points on Friday.

The two teams had already faced off in round one, with Kimberley taking the win by eight points, 5.4 (34) to 4.2 (26)

But in the grand final, it was Regional Districts who flipped the script. They jumped out to an early lead and stayed in control throughout.

Regional Districts led by 10 points at quarter-time. Kimberley closed the gap briefly in the second term before Regional Districts steadied and extended their lead by the main break to 13 points.

The third quarter saw Regional Districts push further ahead, converting opportunities and keeping the Kimberley side under pressure.

They finished the job in the last quarter, kicking another four goals to Kimberley’s two to seal a comprehensive win, 13.8 (86) to 6.4 (40)

Liam Unicomb from Cable Beach finished with four goals and was Kimberley’s leading scorer.

Jock Mosquito — recently named MVP at the Kimberley Colts Carnival — was among the side’s best across the campaign.

Damien Newrey, from Kununurra, was named in the CBH Group Colts All-Stars team.

Boulder City’s Timothy George was awarded best-on-ground for Regional Districts, with his teammate Thomas Coughlan booting three majors in the final.

Despite the result, the Kimberley Colts impressed on day one, going three from three.

They opened the tournament with a win over Regional Districts, 5.4 (34) to 4.2 (26), before notching another win over West Pilbara, 7.4 (46) to 3.2 (20).

They rounded out the day with a strong victory over Avon/Mortlock, 8.4 (52) to 3.0 (18).

Unicomb, D’Andre Jazyk-Cox and Jake Gardiner each kicked two goals across the day, while Mosquito provided drive through the middle.

The WA Country Colts Championships ran from July 10 to 11 at East Fremantle Oval.
