Kimberley bushfire: ‘Watch and act’ alert issued for blaze burning in WA’s north threatening lives and homes

A blaze burning in WA’s north is threatening lives and homes.

A bushfire watch and act alert was issued for people in the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley, just before 5.30pm on Saturday.

People in camping grounds on the eastern side of Durack River in parts of Durack and people on the Gibb River Road are also being urged to be vigilant a the fire is moving fast in a westerly direction towards Durack River.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services have suggested people leave, if it is safe to do so, by heading towards Ellenbrae Station.

“Take your emergency kit with you. It should include an AM/FM radio that runs off batteries, a first aid kit, a woollen blanket, phones, protective clothing, medication and irreplaceable valuables,” the alert read.

“Decide where you will go and how you will get there. This could be with family or friends away from the fire.”

For those who cannot leave their homes safely DFES suggest keeping your doors and windows closed to keep out smoke.

“If you plan to stay and defend ensure you are mentally and physically prepared, with protective clothing and an independent water supply,” the alert read.

“Make final preparations now and start patrolling your property to put out spot fires.

“Turn off evaporative air conditioners, but keep water running through the system if possible to prevent embers entering your home.

“Move flammable materials such as doormats, wheelie bins and outdoor furniture away from your home.”
