Divers almost spark marine search and rescue
Two recreational crayfishermen almost sparked a marine search and rescue operation today when they returned late from a dive in rough seas off Separation Point, Geraldton.
A girlfriend of one of the divers notified police about 3pm.
Geraldton Volunteer Marine Rescue Group and police were about to begin a search when the men returned safely to their vessel about 3.20pm.
The group’s communications officer, Ian Beard, said the men had not followed protocol and should have notified volunteer marine rescue of their dive.
“Give us a call on the radio and let us know that you’re going out, where you’re going and when you’ll be back,” he said.
“If people log on it cuts down our response time by heaps, and when people are in trouble, minutes are hours and seconds are minutes.”
