Geraldton Centacare’s International Men’s Day with comedian Peter Rowsthorn combines laughs with raw honesty

Geraldton marked International Men’s Day last week with a warm and spirited gathering before more than 200 people for a night of music, honesty and laughter.
Centacare’s event at the Geraldton Surf Life Saving Club last Wednesday encouraged people to slow down, talk and enjoy a night shaped around connection and community spirit.
The first speaker was local business owner and Champion Bay Surf Life Saving Club president Peter Nelson, who is a long-time supporter of community wellbeing programs.
Mr Nelson spoke with disarming honesty about the tough seasons in his life. He shared stories of personal loss, moments where he felt close to breaking and the quiet work of picking himself up again.
He described how building a business was as much about rebuilding himself, shaping a path forward through persistence, gratitude and the support of good people. His message of resilience carried real weight and left those in the room listening closely.
The event’s headline speaker comedian Peter Rowsthorn brought a different kind of energy.
Known widely for his role as Brett Craig in Kath and Kim and for decades of stand-up, television and theatre work, Rowsthorn had the crowd laughing within seconds.
His stories bounced between family chaos, the oddities of touring life, the joys and frustrations of raising teenagers and the familiar ways men avoid talking about their own health.
Rowsthorn also touched on his work in mental health advocacy and the importance of checking in on your mates. His performance blended sharp comedy with gentle reminders about looking after yourself, proving why he has remained a favourite across generations.
Fine Tunas — Centacare’s band featuring Darcy Hay and Lachlan Smiley Adam — opened and closed the night with a lively mix of favourites to keep the crowd smiling.
The Geraldton event hit its mark with the purpose behind International Men’s Day to highlight positive role models, promote healthy conversations and remind men that strength is found in connection.
