Geraldton police pursuit: Man facing five charges for evading officers before allegedly crashing Jeep

A 38-year-old man is facing a string of charges after a police pursuit on Brand Highway outside Geraldton that was abandoned because of the danger involved. Police say on Monday, April 6, officers saw a car driving dangerously along Brand Highway near Greenough River Road in Cape Burney. The driver of the vehicle, a 38-year-old man, has been charged with contravening a 24-hour notice prohibiting driving, failing to comply when asked to stop, reckless driving to escape police pursuit, failing to comply with a direction to stop in a circumstance of aggravation, and possessing methamphetamine. Police said the car, a black Jeep Grand Cherokee, was being driven in a “concerning manner” when spotted about 10.45am. Police allege the driver failed to stop and continued driving when directed to pull over. From there, police allege this started a pursuit, which officers later discontinued due to the man’s alleged “dangerous driving behaviour”. Police said they later found the vehicle and driver after the vehicle veered from the road and collided with a tree. The crash occurred on Brand Highway near Moore Road in Dongara and “rendered the car inoperable”. Police are asking for anyone with dash-cam footage vision of a black Jeep Grand Cherokee driving in the Greenough, Bonniefield and Cape Burney areas on Monday morning to come forward. The man has been remanded in custody and will appear before the Geraldton Magistrates Court on May 4.
