High achievers honoured

Justin FrisGeraldton Guardian

The 46th Geraldton Guardian Mid West Sports Awards provided another catalogue of worthy sporting accolades at Queens Park Theatre in Geraldton last night.

Kay Chynoweth was awarded the Crothers Construction senior sports star of the year gong after her watershed year in croquet.

Off the back of solid form in local and regional-based competition, Chynoweth was selected to represent WA’s golf croquet team at the Australian Gold Interstate Shield titles in Queensland, with WA winning the shield for the first time.

Amid a hotly contested Karara Mining Ltd junior sports star of the year field, multi-sport athlete Kingsley Dawson emerged victorious. Selected to represent Australia in softball earlier this year, Dawson also played a large amount of representative football.

The Sport and Recreation WA coach of the year award went to Adrian Bartlett, whose unbeaten coaching season across a variety of football competitions will go in the history books as one of the finest ever seasons. Several other awards were also presented, along with Anthony Little (boxing) being inducted by the Mid West Sports Federation into its hall of fame.

The crowd enjoyed a few anecdotes from Bella Ndayikeze, who co-ordinates youth programs for the Edmund Rice Centre in Perth.
