Geraldton police say a break-in at the local Aquarena, which disrupted the centre’s trading on the weekend, appears to be a result of “juvenile boredom”.

Police are urging anyone involved in the break-in to come forward.

About 5.30am on Saturday, police allege two or more juveniles smashed their way into the Aquarena on Pass Street, damaging the glass door and window. Police said nothing was stolen.

Officer-in-charge Sen. Sgt Chris Martin said it was disappointing alleged young offenders would be committing crimes so early in the morning when they should be at home.

He said the break-in was likely a case of “juvenile boredom”. Sen. Sgt Martin said the estimated damage bill was around $45,000.

“Inquiries at this stage would indicate that a number of suspects have used unknown items to smash the glass panels to the entrance of the Aquarena,” he said.

“They then proceeded to smash into the building and smash the back doors to the store area.”

At the time of publication, Sen. Sgt Martin said two juveniles were in police custody, but had not been charged due to lack of evidence. Police would continue to question other people.

“We were unable to substantiate any evidence against them at this point,” he said.

Sen. Sgt Martin said officers urged anyone with information to come forward.

“The Aquarena is obviously a large recreational centre used by the entire Geraldton community and any damage to it is very disappointing to see, particularly at the entrance,” he said.

“Anyone who is responsible who knows police are looking for them, they should do the right thing and assist police with their inquiries.”
