Jessica Moroney, who joined the Guardian newsroom earlier this year, is a country girl at heart who moved to the big smoke for four years and has now taken a step back to enjoy the Mid West landscape and the region’s fishing and camping lifestyle. How did you come to live in Geraldton and how long have you called it home? I moved to Geraldton at the start of March for a job opportunity at the Guardian after I graduated university earlier in the year. What’s your day job and the best thing about it? Working as a regional journalist, the best thing about my job is I get to travel around the area and meet new people every day. Researching means I learn something new every day. What do you do for fun? I love fishing, eating good food, camping and yoga. I caught my first squid in Horrocks and now I’m always at the Marina at sunset trying to catch another. What’s a habit you would most like to break and one you would most like to start? Apologising — I’m always saying sorry. I want to start a social sport but I can’t decide where I’d fit. What’s your most embarrassing moment or something you wish you’d never done? I wish I didn’t care so much about what people thought of me. If you weren’t in Geraldton, where would you be? I would most likely be in Perth, or in Busselton working on a farm. Who inspires you the most? People who are selfless and help those in need when they can. If money was no object, what would you do? Travel the world. What’s something that never goes out of style and something that should never be in style in the first place? Doc Martens. Overalls for people over eight years old.
