Geraldton is set to come alive this WA Day, with a community celebration that invites locals to experience the rich diversity of the Mid West in a whole new way.
Organised and hosted by the Museum of Geraldton in collaboration with Celebrate WA, this year’s WA Day Festival on Monday 1 June, is going to be a hands-on, all-ages experience that celebrates culture and community.
Storytelling and cultural engagement activities will offer meaningful opportunities to learn, listen and connect, reinforcing WA Day as an important moment of shared reflection and pride.
“WA Day in Geraldton is all about bringing people together through shared experiences,” Museum of Geraldton site manager Leigh O’Brien said.
“From hands-on cultural activities to storytelling and food, this event gives our community the chance to connect, learn from one another and celebrate the diversity that makes the Mid West so special.”
A standout feature will be the collaborative art piece, where you can contribute to a shared canvas while learning about cultural storytelling. Yamaji artist Carol Martin, the first Aboriginal Woman to be elected to any Australian Parliament, will run the collaborative community artwork that demonstrates how we all form part of a whole.
Across the day, a series of immersive workshops will transport visitors around the world. Try your hand at a traditional Chinese tea ceremony, or jump into a Bollywood dance session, guided by passionate community members ready to share their culture. Families can also enjoy a wide range of activities including face painting, a dedicated toddler play zone, and for those keen to get active, inclusive experiences like wheelchair basketball.
The Greenough Wildlife & Bird Park will be there with live animals like pythons, shinglebacks and frilled-neck lizards, so you can learn all about the native animals living in and around your backyard.
Stories, culture and connection
First Nations culture will be woven throughout the day, with performers on stage sharing dance, storytelling and cultural practices. The program promises a strong focus on elevating young voices and celebrating the region’s deep cultural heritage. See Geraldton favourites Karloo Rockers bring their unique blend of rock, reggae and country to the stage.
Foodie delights
Geraldton’s WA Day will deliver a foodie experience that’s not to be missed. A curated line-up of food vendors will be serving up multicultural dishes alongside local favourites. It’s an opportunity to taste something new, support local businesses and experience the diversity that defines the Mid West.
