Melbourne Comedy Festival promises a night of laughs and fun at Geraldton’s Queens Park Theatre

The Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow is bringing its 27th annual tour to Geraldton this week, promising a night of top-tier humour and entertainment.
The event, which is set to take place on Thursday, May 29 at Queens Park Theatre, will feature a dynamic line-up of comedy legends and fresh faces from the 2025 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
Among the stand-out performers is Takashi Wakasugi, a Japanese comedian who has quickly become a beloved figure in the Australian comedy scene.
After moving to Australia as a student, Wakasugi quickly made a name for himself with his unique blend of Japanese and Australian humour.
“I started comedy in Australia, not in Japan. I just wanted to improve my English. And also it’s kind of the dream. If you study another language and if you tell the joke in another language, that’s kind of the dream, you know?” he said.
When asked what his favourite part of stand-up comedy was, he likened the act to a 12th century Japanese warrior.
“I always say stand-up comedy is a bit similar to a Japanese samurai. You know, because you are always alone on the stage by yourself. And if you kill or die, there’s no other option, and you have to be quick,” he explained.
“It’s very interesting, and I love it. And I really think stand-up comedy is very cool, just by yourself, microphone, tell a joke, control the audience.”
Wakasugi’s accolades include winning the director’s choice award at the 2023 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and a nomination for most outstanding show in 2024.
He has also appeared on popular television programs such as Thank God You’re Here and Taskmaster Australia.
He said he was most looking forward to seeing the stunning scenery, drinking good coffee and eating some good bakery pies in Geraldton.
Wakasugi will be appearing at all 12 WA shows and is one part of the comedy experience you won’t want to miss.
