Saltwater Cowboys of Shark Bay: Documentary on seagrass restoration chosen for Climate Story Lab Australia

A uniquely Western Australian story blending cultural revival, environmental restoration, and Indigenous enterprise has been selected for a prestigious national documentary lab. Saltwater Cowboys of Shark Bay, directed by Karla Hart and produced by Renee Kennedy, is one of the seven projects chosen for the inaugural Climate Story Lab Australia, to be held from August 26-28 in Sydney. The six-part documentary series follows Malgana entrepreneur Michael Wear and his Indigenous startup, Tidal Moon, as they work to restore the seagrass meadows of Shark Bay while reviving Australia’s sea cucumber trade. Through sustainable harvesting and deep cultural connection, the team is building a business that empowers community and combats climate change. “Three years ago, Malgana man Mr Wear shared his inspiring vision to launch an Indigenous-led business sustainably harvesting sea cucumbers from the waters of Gutharraguda, also known as Shark Bay,” said executive producer Nathan Gibbs. “I was captivated by the concept, recognising its potential to empower the community and protect the environment while making for compelling television. To have the project selected as part of the Climate Story Lab is an incredible opportunity for our team.” The lab, co-hosted by Documentary Australia and the Doc Society, aims to help storytellers craft stronger messages, reach the right audiences and build meaningful partnerships to create real-world change. Hart said the project’s message spoke directly to her own heritage and values. “I love the concept of Saltwater Cowboys and was inspired to be part of the team because I love what Michael and the team at Tidal Moon are doing in Shark Bay and their aspirations for the future,” she said. “With deep connections to the ocean from my grandmother’s Goreng boodja, particularly Bremer Bay, I care about what happens to our oceans and I am excited to be a part of the cohort in Sydney to raise the profile of Tidal Moon, their endeavours and the Shark Bay community.” Producer Renee Kennedy added: “Michael Wear’s pioneering vision . . . is both groundbreaking and deeply tied to Malgana cultural and historical roots.
