Geraldton Primary School students are learning what to do when they hit rough waters.

The Fitzgerald Street school introduced students to a junior marine safety program developed by the Transport and Education Department last week, to teach them to be boat wise.

Year 3 and 4 students learned about adverse weather conditions, lifejacket use, what to do in an accident and the importance of boat users communicating their whereabouts to people on land.

Geraldton Volunteer Marine Rescue Group volunteers have previously said problems arise when boat skippers fail to check in with the organisation before they go offshore.
