Geraldton’s Kerri Blades and Sarah Barndon have stuck by each other through thick and thin.

After meeting in Derby five years ago, the pair have formed a close bond and leaned on each other through life’s ups and downs.

Even after Mrs Blades was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in November, Mrs Barndon found a way to support her long-time friend.

In a show of solidarity, Mrs Barndon had her shaved her head at CrossFit Geraldton last weekend, as part of a fundraising event that generated $3000 for Mrs Blades.

Mrs Blades said as she was going through chemotherapy, having a friend willing to join her in the “bald brigade” was a much-needed boost.

“It’s really touching what she’s willing to do for me,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to not being the only bald one. When I moved to Geraldton, Sarah was all I knew and she’s been there through a lot of the big things, including my diagnosis.

“It means a lot but I’m also blown away by the support the community has given this event.

“It’s a real boost.”

Mrs Barndon said she looked forward to her new care-free do, but her young daughter wasn’t as thrilled.

“It’s a bit embarrassing for her apparently, so she asked if Dad can be the one to pick her up from school instead,” she said.

“The funny thing is, he’s bald too.”

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month will held in February and Mrs Blades hoped by speaking out, others could be aware of the symptoms.

“Before my diagnosis I had a bloated abdomen, urine frequency and a lot of difficulty eating,” she said.

“When I went to the doctor they found a hard mass and from there they discovered the tumour.

“It’s important people know and are aware of the symptoms.

“That way they are able to catch it early.”
