Lauren Mary Turvey: Mother accused of hotel burglary granted bail following pleas of not guilty

A woman remanded in custody for burglary and stealing allegations will spend Christmas with her children after the court granted her bail, despite not cooperating with previous community orders. Lauren Mary Turvey, 27, appeared in Geraldton Magistrates Court from remand on Thursday, where she pleaded not guilty to aggravated home burglary and stealing. It was alleged in court Ms Turvey broke into a hotel room and stole two backpacks, a driver’s licence, bank cards and other miscellaneous items to the value of $680 sometime between December 27 and 28 last year. In seeking bail, defence counsel Eva Svanberg said Ms Turvey was looking after her children without much support and it would be a long time before the next hearing. Community corrections told the court Ms Turvey had a history of not complying with urine analysis or following directions and didn’t engage with Mid West Community Alcohol and Drug Service. Prosecuting officer Sgt Paul White opposed bail, stating Ms Turvey “chose to not to comply so bail would not be appropriate”. Magistrate Angus Hockton said Ms Turvey had a long record for breaching various orders and bail conditions, but agreed the trial, if there was one, could be towards the end of next year. “Given the delay, given you understand the consequences and you have children ... I’ll give you the last opportunity with a degree of uncertainty,” he said. “You have the key to your cell and you can let yourself in or out.” Ms Turvey was granted bail on conditions she does not consume alcohol, drugs or non-prescribed medication and complies with urine analysis. The case was adjourned until Wednesday, January 24 for a trial listing hearing.
