Sunset Soiree fundraiser aims to support increased demand and planned expansion at Goldfields Women’s Refuge

The community is being asked to stand against family and domestic violence by attending a Sunset Soiree fundraiser to support increased demand and planned expansion at the Goldfields Women’s Refuge. The inaugural fundraising gala will see 250 community members come together at Evolution Mining Stadium in May to support ongoing critical services and a planned expansion of the centre to accommodate more offices. Chief executive Suzie Williams said while the centre was grateful for the government funding it received, she expected demand to continue to increase and funding for primary prevention was needed to ensure as many women and children as possible were protected. “It’s the direction we see the world going and we are trying to plan for future demand this centre is going to experience because of heightened levels of DV and higher risk,” she said. “The soiree is a celebration of the community coming together to support a service that helps protect women and children. “It’s a way for us to bring our community together and make a very firm stance against family and domestic violence.” She said the event would include some educational elements, but would otherwise be kept light, with Australian comedian Peter Rowsthorn — known for his role in Kath and Kim — MCing the event. Entertainment will be provided by Chris Lloyd and the Jamie Rigg Band and various auction items will be up for grabs, including some hot ticket items. The May 15 soiree will also feature a diamond champagne bar, raffles and games.
