WA Museum Boola Bardip exhibition tells Spinifex people’s story of resilience, connection and belonging

It’s not every day you get to revisit the artwork you watched come to life on the canvas in one of Australia’s most remote Aboriginal communities 12 years ago. That’s the reality for Ross Chadwick, long-time curator and head of the archaeology and anthropology department at WA Museum Boola Bardip. Mr Chadwick is the lead curator of upcoming exhibition, Spinifex People: Art and stories from Pila Nguru, which is set to take over 1000sqm of exhibition space at the museum from Thursday, displaying 94 pieces from 48 artists. The Sunday Times had an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the exhibition being put together, and a little bit of an insight into the curator’s process. Standing in front of the large piece, Pukara, he described an idyllic scene, senior Spinifex men painting together, desert dogs curled up around them, snoozing in the sun. A photo he supplied later showed he made no exaggerations — 10 men painting the enormous canvas spread out on the red dirt, surrounded by even more desert dogs. It was in Tjuntjuntjara, a remote Aboriginal community about 680km north-east of Kalgoorlie and 200km west of the SA border, home of the Pila Nguru, meaning “from the spinifex plains” in Pitjantjatjara. Like many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the Spinifex or Anangu people have endured decades of displacement since colonisation. The exhibition aims to take visitors on the Pila Nguru journey, telling stories of connection to country, being forced off their land for British atomic bomb testing, and decades of displacement before settling in Tjuntjuntjara. It will also display the pivotal artworks that became the cornerstone of the Spinifex people’s Native Title determination in 2000. “The paintings connect very directly to the Native Title process and the community’s wishes to try and document and record their very deep connection to country,” Mr Chadwick said. They map important cultural landmarks, songlines and Tjukurpa (Dreaming) stories across 55,000sqkm of country, which helped them become the second group in WA to receive Native Title determination. It was this push for land rights that launched the Spinifex Arts Project in 1997 and since then, the project has gone from strength to strength. Mr Chadwick and his team have been putting the exhibition together for weeks, and as it took shape, he talked about a large interactive piece being assembled on one wall. It’s the same shape as the determination area, with smaller artworks of important features of country to be placed on the wooden panels like a map. The experienced curator says it’s been important to him to demonstrate that Spinifex people are “deeply connected to place, that the stories they tell are very much intimate and connected to their being”. It’s a monumental undertaking, and it’s one he doesn’t take lightly. With the museum for more than 35 years, he knows the diligence and commitment required to curate with care. “I think one of the unique things about their story is that in the 1950s, the British atomic (bomb) trials in South Australia held over a period of almost 10 years had this big impact on communities,” he said. Part of the exhibition will show footage from the dangerous trials conducted by Britain in Emu Field and Maralinga through the 1950s and 1960s, which forced Anangu (Spinifex), Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara peoples off their land. Mr Chadwick said the dramatic upheaval and unknown threat of the “the cloud” has woven its way into Spinifex history. The exhibition conveys the deep connection and reverence Anangu people have for country, culture and belonging. “Lots of families have passed, but we are still here painting story, Tjukurpa,” senior law man and artist Ned Grant said. “Palumpa kulintjaku — they’ll listen and learn.” Some of the artists will make the trip to Perth for the opening, and for Milpa artist Maureen Donnegan it will be her first time back since she was a child. “I haven’t been to Perth since I was a little girl, a long time ago,” she said. “I want to look at it (the exhibition), see the place filled with paintings from here for the first time.” Spinifex Arts Project director and artist Lennard Walker said he and his fellow artists are “really proud” of their artworks. “This canvas, this art centre is really strong. We keep painting to share our story,” Walker said.
