WA hospitals: Cook Government select developers for Royal Perth Hospital and Peel Health Campus early works

The Cook Government has taken another step towards building two hospitals by selecting developers to begin both projects, which are expected to begin construction this year. Lendlease Construction has been chosen as the preferred agency for a new block and emergency department at Royal Perth Hospital, while a joint venture between Built and Sacyr Construction Australia is the preferred lead alliance for the new Peel Health Campus. The State Government announced in November it would spend $33 million to design a six-storey building at RPH that promised to double the number of bays in the current emergency department. The agencies selected for the projects — comprising architects, manufacturers and builders — will be tasked with design, development, site investigations and early works preparation. Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey said the project tender agreements would be awarded following the design and development stage. “Through the Office of Major Infrastructure Delivery, we did a rapid review of both those projects, and we did announce a hospital building fund, which included the funding of two major new projects, a complete new Peel Health Campus and also a six-storey(RPH) build, including a new emergency department,” he said. “We made that announcement in November and already are really pleased to announce that we today have secured preferred alliance partners to both projects. “We made very strong, clear commitments in terms of both Peel Health Campus and Royal Perth Hospital, and today’s announcement signals that we’re getting on with the job to accelerate health projects.” Mr Carey said he believed construction on both projects would start this year and would aim to be complete in 2029. He said further details on the cost of building the hospitals would be announced in due course. The announcement came on the same day as construction began on the Byford Health Hub, which will provide nearby residents with access to primary care, community, social, and specialist health services in one location. The hub will offer mobile X-rays, pathology, mental health and telehealth services, a rehabilitation gym and child health nursing clinic rooms. A community care navigator will be hired to support residents with complex needs. Premier Roger Cook said the health hub was the first-of-its-kind in WA. “This project will also reduce pressure on Armadale hospital’s emergency department,” he said.
