It’s state against state as AFL Origin returns for the first time in more than 20 years as Western Australia and Victoria reignite a historic rivalry at Optus Stadium.

Victoria, led by Marcus Bontempelli are heavy favourites with a midfield stuffed full of premiership winners and All-Australians, including the likes of Nick Daicos, Matt Rowell and Bailey Smith.

But don’t discount Patrick Cripps and his WA counterparts who will be desperate to spring an upset in front of a parochial sell-out crowd.

Follow all the action live!

Goodnight

That’s where we leave you after a terrific evening.

It certainly whets the appetite for the season to start proper but we’ll keep a close eye on the fallout from Weitering’s injury.

Until then, goodbye for now and thanks for joining us

Victoria did have a song though it’s fair to say not everyone has it memorised yet.

Some early reaction on the Lachie Ash medal win

Fair to say plenty of fans were left just as confused over the choice of winner which was chosen by Chris Scott, Sam Mitchell and Gary Lyon.

Daicos finished with 38 touches seven clearances and a goal for reference.

Match Report

Lachie Ash wins the EJ Whitten Medal

That is a shock.

“To our boys it’s been an absolute pleasure thank you and see you next year.”

Jesse Hogan wins the Graham Moss medal

Presented by the man himself he was massive with his five goals to almost drag WA back.

“Hopefully we’re here again next year.”

Patrick Cripps speaks

First of all I just want to thank the WA government for hosting this and we’d love to run it back next year.

To Vicotria what a contest it was bloody good fun, the game was played the right way, to the WA’s boys we know how bloody proud we are to represent the black and gold.

And to everyone at home Origin is here to stay.
