Cricket: Australia were ambushed in Darwin to fall to a historic loss against Bangladesh and now enter the Great Barrier Reef Arena with question marks over their experienced but aging squad.

Bangladesh will hold no fears after their historic Test victory and are looking to become the first-ever visiting team to whitewash Australia on home soil.

Renshaw goes

It’s an unhappy return to Test cricket for Matt Renshaw!

Taskin Ahmed got the ball in the right area and Australia’s new opener was squared up, with an attempt to work the ball through midwicket creating a simple catching chance for Tanzid Hasan at third slip.

That’s exactly what Bangladesh needed.

AUS 1-22

Renshaw away

A thickish outside edge which raced away to the boundary got Matt Renshaw off the mark in his return to the side.

The Queensland left-hander is the owner of a fine Sheffield Shield record at Mackay’s Great Barrier Reef Arena, having compiled hundreds in two of his three innings threre.

Opposite starts

Taskin Ahmed was not able to replicate what Mitchell Starc did with the first ball of the game this morning, with his effort swinging down the leg side and beating Litton Das behind the stumps to go away for four byes.

Bangladesh’s opening bowler quickly found his radar later in the over, drawing a play-and-miss from Matt Renshaw from the first delivery the called-up opener faced.

Renshaw’s return

Matt Renshaw is about to resume his Test career alongside Travis Head at the top of Australia’s order.

He has taken a long path to get back here.

All out

A frustrating 10th-wicket partnership has now ended, with Shoriful Islam handing Mitchell Starc his sixth wicket courtesy of a tickle off his glove through to Alex Carey behind the stumps.

Starc finishes with figures of 6-12 from his 10 magnificent overs.

Australia’s new opener Matt Renshaw will be at the crease alongside Travis Head in around 10 minutes.

Off the square

The square drive is certainly proving a profitable stroke for Bangladesh tail-ender Taijul Islam.

After playing one described as the “shot of the match” by Channel Seven’s Ricky Ponting in Darwin, he has followed up with two mroe sublime boundaries with the same stroke in Mackay.

Bangladesh’s 10th-wicket stand is now worth 24.

BAN 9-63

Enterprising last-wicket stand

The 10th-wicket partnership has been the best of Bangladesh’s first innings with the bat.

And it has all come in boundaries, of which Shoriful Islam and Taijul Islam have combined to hit four.

BAN 9-55

Bangladesh avoid lowest-ever score

Shoriful Islam carved Pat Cummins through point for four to ensure Bangladesh at least tied their worst-ever Test score of 43.

And Taijul Islam followed up in the same fashion off Josh Hazlewood to ensure they at least avoided that indignity.

BAN 9-47

Unfortunate slice of history looms after ninth wicket

Taskin Ahmed certainly tried to take Australia’s bowlers on during his brief stay at the crease.

But his attempt to hit Pat Cummins out of Great Barrier Reef Arena only went straight up in the air, and the returning Matt Renshaw was all too happy to take the catch.

Bangladesh still need five more runs to beat their worst-ever Test score.

BAN 9-39

Controversy in Mackay!

In an interesting moment at the Great Barrier Reef Arena, Taskin Ahmed has popped a catching opportunity straight up in the air, but then collided with Josh Hazlewood as the ball went to ground.

Pat Cummins went to speak with umpire Nitin Menon, presumably about the possibility of an obstructing the field call, but was turned away.

BAN 8-39
