Harley Reid: West Coast Eagles closing in on new deal as star looks to extend stay
West Coast are making headway towards a new deal for superstar Harley Reid, with new details emerging of what his future at the club could look like.
As the Eagles look to rebuild from their lowest ebb, Reid remains the linchpin of their plans, having led the midfield in the absence of Elliot Yeo this season.
The 20-year-old, who remains contracted until the end of next season, has long been linked with a move back to Victoria with clubs reportedly queuing up with long-term offers for the emerging superstar.
Speculation around his future hit overdrive last week with reports St Kilda had presented a long-term offer worth around $25 million.
Reid’s management has been locked in negotiations with the Eagles for months, having reportedly put a variety of options on the table for Reid, including a monster $24 million 11-year deal.
However, it appears Reid is looking increasingly likely to sign a short-term extension.
“It’s not as far along as people would like to think it is, but I will say this, the conversation is now a positive one between West Coast and Harley’s management,” Seven’s Ryan Daniels said.
“A possible deal would be a two-to-three year extension rather than the monster two, plus nine-year deal and would likely see Harley join Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera in the $2 million club”
Reid returned to training last week, having spent time back home in Victoria after an ankle injury suffered in the western derby ended his season.
On Monday, West Coast coach Andrew McQualter said the star remains fully committed to the Eagles.
“I’ve said this many times, Harley is invested in our football club. Clearly, he’s injured at the moment, but he’s back here doing his rehab program, building himself back up for a big season,” he said.
“We’re working closely with Harley’s management group, and as soon as there’s any news to share, we’ll share it.”
It comes as Daniels expects captain Oscar Allen to formally announce his departure from the club in the coming days, once the Eagles season is officially over.
“It looks like Monday or Tuesday, Allen will announce formally that he’s leaving,” Daniels said.
West Coast, who have already secured a second wooden spoon in the past three seasons, host last year’s grand finalists Sydney at Optus Stadium on Saturday.
