The family of Perth musician Courtney Murphy have revealed the extent of the singer’s treatment following his late stage bowel cancer diagnosis.

A recent statement penned by brothers Chris and Kieran advised the beloved family member underwent “extensive chemo” over the weekend to combat his ailing condition and is undergoing surgery today.

“He’s gone into that surgery knowing he has the love and support of WA behind him,” the statement read.

Hoping to crowd-fund their brother’s medical bills and upcoming expenses, a GoFundMe page was launched earlier this week that has already eclipsed $105,000.

“West Aussies have really come out in support of our brother. And we can’t put into words how grateful we are,” the brothers said.

“Courtney is a community man, and to see that same community having his back at such a dark time has been truly extraordinary.”

With his exploits spanning beyond the WA stage, the Murphys hope to remind people he’s just like them in many ways and appreciates the support.

“While many people remember him as the muso from Idol, the fact is, he’s just an average suburban family man. Like many of us, he’s got a mortgage, bills and kids to feed.”

Taking a positive outlook into today’s surgery, the family admits it’s not easy to look too far ahead as his condition is “advanced and very serious”.

While an outpouring of support from the community has buoyed the family’s spirits, they encourage those who can afford to dig deep to do so in the name of their brother.

“Through our GoFundMe, we want to try and remove some of the financial stress he is now faced with and allow him to focus on the fight ahead.

“To all the West Aussies that have gotten behind our family, from the bottom of our hearts – thank you.”
