Echoes of valour: Five meaningful ways to honour our heroes this ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day commemorates the bravery and sacrifice of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) soldiers who fought gallantly during World War I. More than 100 years later, ANZAC Day holds significant importance in the hearts of Australians. The day offers an opportunity to reflect on the values, of courage and mateship that define our national identity, that are intrinsic to the Australian ethos.

As we approach this solemn day of remembrance, it’s a fitting time to consider meaningful ways to pay tribute to those who have shaped our history and honour their legacy.

Here are five meaningful ways to commemorate our heroes this ANZAC Day:

1. Attend the March

Joining the ANZAC Day March in the City of Perth is a great way to honour the more than (62,417 according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics) 62,000 veterans in Western Australia. As they march alongside their comrades, this event symbolises camaraderie and commemoration. ANZAC Day marches are not limited to Perth; they take place across the country, from small towns to major cities. The March provides an opportunity to recognise the families of servicemen and women who have bravely served and sacrificed their lives in various conflicts and peacekeeping missions. It is a moment for the public to come together, watch the March, and pay their respects to the service people marching and the legacies they represent.

2. Participate in the Family & Mateship event

After the ANZAC Day March, join the free Family & Mateship event, open to all. This gathering features live music, food vans, drinks, and activities for children, making it an enjoyable outing for families. The event also showcases interactive military vehicles and offers commemorative activities suitable for all ages.

3. All-Abilities Sunset Service

On the eve of ANZAC Day 2024, RSLWA will be holding an inclusive Sunset Service to remember and reflect on the brave men and women who have made so many sacrifices. This ceremony, with additional accessibility measures including audio description, wheelchair access, Auslan, low sensory facilities, ACROD parking, and DADAA assistance is open to all who wish to share the sunset and commemorate ANZAC Day.

4. Experience the Dawn Service

Each year, thousands of Western Australians gather at sunrise in Kings Park to remember those who lost their lives in conflict. As the sun rises, people of all ages and backgrounds listen to inspiring words, join to sing, and pause in silence to reflect and remember the sacrifices made by our brave men and women. The Dawn service is open to all who wish to join.

5. Gunfire Breakfast

The Government House Gardens will host a barbeque breakfast this ANZAC Day; a chance to connect with the WA Veteran community. It’s a tradition that dates back to the 1890s. Gunfire refers to an early morning mix of rum and black tea, providing a dash of courage before a day on the battlefield. The concoction started with English Army Soldiers and was quickly adopted by the Australian and New Zealand soldiers. RSLWA, in collaboration with the Rotary Club, will provide breakfast for a gold coin donation. Afterwards, you can head to St Georges Terrace for the March.
