Post bike sparks a story

Geraldton Guardian

A Geraldton Guardian reader recently contacted the paper surprised to see her postie riding an electric bike.

While it still houses the usual motorbikes, Geraldton Post Office also has five electric bikes for postal delivery officers to use when transporting mail.

An Australia Post spokesman said the electric vehicles were designed to improve safety for posties and reduce environmental impact.

“We currently have five electric bikes delivering in the Geraldton area and more than 1700 on the road around the country,” he said.

“Not only are electric bikes kinder to the environment, our posties love them too.

“Many have said they’ve noticed a big difference to their general health and wellbeing since making the switch to an electric bike from a motorbike.”

Australia Post has made a number of environmentally conscious moves in the past few years, including recycling or reusing 14,506 tonnes of material and launching its first Environmental Action Plan 2018–2020.
