More than 1000 new blood donors are needed in WA over the next six weeks to address a seasonal shortage and meet demand from hospitals.

Less than 6 per cent of those eligible to give blood are donors, prompting Lifeblood — formerly the Australian Red Cross Blood Service — to urge people to donate as soon as possible.

Donor services director Cath Stone said it was a growing challenge to make sure enough blood was donated.

A blood donation is needed every 24 seconds across Australia. In WA alone, a minimum of 1040 new donors are needed over the next six weeks.

“Our need for blood is increasing,” Ms Stone said.

Only 500,000 of the nine million Australians eligible to donate blood are regular donors.

Lifeblood has enlisted six artists — including West Australian Chris Nixon — to design artwork bandages that will be used with every donation for the next six weeks.

Donors are being encouraged to share a photograph of their bandaged arm on social media to spread the word about the importance of blood donation.

Rideshare service DiDi is offering 50 per cent off fares to and from donor centres until November 29.
