Four young people across the State have been recognised in the WA Fire and Emergency Services Awards — including one Mid West volunteer.

Jurien Bay volunteer fire and rescue service member Danielle Ryder won the volunteer firefighting young person of the year award last week.

Working as a school teacher, she recognised the gap in her community between Emergency Services Cadet Corps participation and active adult membership.

Ms Ryder is working to build the next wave of emergency services volunteers, and has designed, facilitated, and co-ordinated training to transition young volunteers to local brigades.

In the past year, she has helped 19 young people gain the skills they need to volunteer with emergency services, compared to 11 in the previous year.

The other three volunteers were recognised in their marine rescue, SES and DFES roles.

Ms Ryder is a finalist for the WAFES young person of the year award, alongside the other three young volunteers recognised in their fields. The winner will be announced in September.

Acting Emergency Services Minister Tony Buti said the awards were a chance to “thank and celebrate emergency services personnel for the incredible job they do protecting Western Australians”.

“These four courageous young people have made a lasting and positive impact on our emergency services and community spirit,” he said.
