With the national celebration of Neighbour Day approaching, the City of Greater Geraldton is offering gift cards to community groups, helping residents connect with one another.

Neighbours can get to know each other easier through this month’s City’s Neighbour Days program, which aims to build respectful and sustainable relationships.

The celebration is held annually on the last Sunday of March, and this year the City will provide the Rangeway Utakarra Karloo Progress Association, Beachlands Community Inc, Drummond Cove Playgroup and Sunset Beach Community Group with $300 Buy Local Greater Geraldton Gift Cards.

The gift cards will assist the community groups to run Neighbour Day gatherings and promote the building of respectful and sustainable relationships.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said he was enthusiastic about the initiative and hoped it would foster a social connection through picnics, morning tea or a sausage sizzle at the park.

“The research is clear, when people connect with their communities, they have a greater sense of belonging, which leads to improved mental well-being and a reduction in loneliness,” he said.

“Building relationships with those around us also helps to strengthen our resilience for when we are faced with life’s inevitable challenges.”

Neighbour Day events will be held on individual days, starting with Rangeway Utakarra Karloo Progress Association on Monday, March 20 from 5.30pm-7pm at Levy Street Hall.

Beachlands Community Inc will follow the lead at Fraser St Park on Saturday, March 25 from 9am-11am, while Sunset Beach Community Group will be at Pebble Park on Sunday, March 26 from 3pm onwards.

Finally, Drummond Cove Playgroup will host their event at John Batten Hall on Tuesday, March 28 from 9am-11.30am.
