A 27-year-old man has been arrested and charged at a Broome bus stop after allegedly being found with more than half a kilogram of cocaine.

Police said the man was arrested at 6.45am on September 4 at a bus stop on Hammersley Street after arriving in Broome from Perth on a commercial bus service.

While searching the man’s belongings, police allege they found 506g of cocaine and 108g of MDMA and evidence that the man was intending to sell the drugs in Broome.

Kimberley Supt John Hutchison said police would continue to target people bringing illegal drugs into the region.

“A seizure of this size means a significant quantity of cocaine and MDMA won’t be reaching our streets. So, these drugs won’t have the devastating impact we know they do on our people and in our communities,” he said.

“We will continue to run operations targeting drug dealers no matter what they’re peddling, because we need to stop them from setting up here.

“Throughout Australia we can see the catastrophic effects crime can have when perpetrators are prepared to go to great lengths to protect their markets.

“If you get caught with large quantities of illicit drugs, you face the very real prospect of going to jail.”

The 27-year-old man from Djugun was charged with two possession of prohibited drugs with intent to sell or supply charges, a possession of drug paraphernalia charge and another possession charge.

He has been remanded in custody to appear in the Broome Magistrates Court on September 15.
